Terms

By using this website you agree to the terms below.

Purpose of the content

Thrift File publishes general information about secondhand and vintage clothing: how to shop for it, how to judge it, how to care for it and how to sell it. The content is educational. It is written to help you ask better questions, not to appraise a garment you are holding or to price one you are listing.

No personalised advice

Two identical garments can differ in value and in wear because of how they were made, how they were stored and how they were worn. None of that is visible to us. A guide that describes a rule of thumb about fit, durability or resale is describing a general tendency, not your garment.

If you are buying or selling something of significant value, or dealing with a delicate or historic piece, get it looked at in person by someone qualified to examine it.

Accuracy and change

Fibre content, labelling conventions, sizing systems and the secondhand market all change. We aim to be accurate when we publish and to correct errors when they are found, but we cannot guarantee that every detail remains current or that it applies to the garment in front of you. Prices in particular are not fixed facts: what something fetches depends on condition, size, demand and the platform, and nothing on this site should be read as a valuation.

Some links to retailers, marketplaces and resale platforms on this site are affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. This site also displays advertising.

Commission never determines the content of a guide, and we do not publish sponsored reviews. Where we recommend against a product, a brand or a category, that recommendation stands whether or not an affiliate link exists. Affiliate links are disclosed where they appear.

Cleaning, repair and alteration at your own risk

Advice about washing, stain removal, storage and repair is offered as general guidance. Cleaning methods that are safe for one garment can ruin another, and home repairs can reduce the value of a piece. Test anything unfamiliar on an inconspicuous area first, and use a professional cleaner or repairer for anything valuable, delicate or sentimental. You take on the risk of work you do yourself.

Limitation of liability

Thrift File is provided on an “as is” basis. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss arising from your use of this site, including a purchase you regret, a garment that does not fit, damage caused during cleaning or repair, or a sale that fetches less than you hoped.

Your purchase is a contract with the seller, not with us. Returns, refunds and disputes are governed by that seller’s terms and by your local consumer law.

Links to other websites are provided for reference. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, their stock, their prices or their privacy practices.
